Sound in Space is a project built of two short films experimenting with spatialised audio, as well as the association and dislocation between sound and image. The footage is a compilation from various experimental and avant-garde short films.

 

The first piece, titled L'absence de Gris (The Absence of Grey), included footage from the short films Come Closer (1952) and Scratch Pad (1960), both by Hy Hirsh, as well as Palindrome (1969) and Matrix [First Dream] (1977/1979), both by Hollis Frampton.

The intention of this piece was to use the compiled footage on screen to dictate what happened in the piece on a sonic level, bringing the abstract idea of 'What if colour and shape can dictate the sound?'

 

The second piece, titled Le Dèsodre (The Disorder), was created with more intent of delivering a narrative or feeling.

This piece uses a compilation of Fotodinamismo Futurista (Futurist Photodynamism) photographs, a 1911-1913 artistic technique and theory developed by Anton Giulio and Arturo Bragaglia, the short film Filmstudie (1926) by Hans Richter, and Candidate for Murder (1950) by Don Coleman.

Utilising the same techniques and even the same sounds as L'absence de Gris, this piece instead tries to invoke and explore the themes of isolation, identity, and anxiety, with the films being layered and reorganised to create a narrative that the sounds were then produced and constructed around.

Both pieces were produced and intended for 7.1.2 as well as binaural formats; the videos attached are bounced down to binaural.
